Merchant Cash Advance: How It Works and What It Costs
A merchant cash advance (MCA) is a lump sum of capital that a business receives in exchange for a fixed percentage of its future sales. It is not a loan: providers buy a portion of receivables and collect through daily or weekly ACH debits until the agreed payback (advance × factor rate) is reached. MCAs fund fast and accept lower credit, but usually cost more than term loans.

What is a merchant cash advance?
With an MCA, a funding provider purchases a specified amount of your future receivables at a discount. You receive the purchase price up front, and the provider collects the purchased amount over time as you generate sales.
The cost is expressed as a factor rate rather than an interest rate. A $50,000 advance at a 1.30 factor rate has a total payback of $65,000. There's no interest compounding — the payback is fixed at funding.
Collection happens either as a holdback percentage of daily card or bank deposits (often 8%–20%), or as a fixed daily or weekly ACH debit sized from your average revenue. True split-funded or reconciled MCAs adjust payments when revenue drops.
